Beijing Queer Chorus
Beijing Queer Chorus (BQC) is a semiprofessional mixed chorus. Founded in 2008, BQC is the first publicly performing LGBT+ chorus in Mainland China, and is one of the first two Asian choruses that attended international LGBT+ choral festivals. BQC currently has over 100 members registered.
Practicing towards completing the mission, "Sing for a Better World", BQC regularly conducts public music concerts and events in various forms, and actively participates in domestic and international exchange. In 2018, after the experience of attending LGBT+ choral festivals around the world, BQC co-organized the 1st China Queer Chorus Festival together with six Chinese LGBT+ choruses from different cities. In the same year, BQC was featured in Reporter's Diary: Rainbow Rights by China Global Television Network (CGTN). So far, BQC has toured to numerous cities including Tianjin, Hong Kong, London, Seattle, Portland for both choral performance and cultural exchange. Through music, BQC members hope to break down the barriers between individuals, as well as between groups.
Apart from the music practice, BQC has been a dedicating advocate for the LGBT+ community, too, through collaborations with partners from diverse fields, including: Embassy of the U.K. and Embassy of the Netherlands in Beijing, China, TEDx, VICE China, and Broadway Musical RENT. In addition, BQC also makes an effort to contribute to public welfare by sharing prevention knowledge and better understanding of AIDS, hosting themed panel discussions, and attending environmental protection events.
It has been a decade since BQC was first founded in 2008. Through out the ten years, we sing for happiness and sorrow, vulnerability and courage, yearning and vision. In the spectrum of diverse emotions and melodies, BQC has been navigating our own ways as a choral group to make a voice.
We sing for a better self, and a better world.
